TRIAL and ERROR – TRANSforming health and justice
2019/11/22 – 2020/01/31
In Trial and Error – TRANSforming health and justice, Giegold & Weiß deal with health care, sex education and the personality rights of trans* people in two multimedia installations. The work “Genital Call” discusses social norms and questions of personal privacy. It responds to lawsuits in England and Scotland, which punished young trans* for not having commented on their sexual gender identity and the look or shape of their genitalia when meeting someone for a date.
On the evening of the opening Giegold & Weiß invite the visitors to participate in the performance “Genitals on Trial” and to anonymously describe their genitals and have them sketched by a court artist. How can we imagine our sexual organs far from social norms? The installation and the live event oppose the common assumption of only two genders and expand binary notions of sexuality in a playful as well as poetic way.
In their new work FtM vs HIV the duo focuses on biopolitical power structures and forms of discrimination in the health care system which are specific to FtM (Female to Male) and non-binary trans*. Here, playful metaphors meet violent social conditions in the wrestling ring making trans* normalities tangible. Unapologetically, TRIAL and ERROR – TRANSforming health and justice makes structural violence, discrimination, marginalization and medical blind spot visible. The exhibition project optimistically shows that social recognition, empowerment and change is a process that, despite all setbacks, is worth fighting for.
